Dear Friends,
This week four men prayed with me according to the pattern of Luke 18:13 & Romans 10:9.
The first was a European man, living in China, fluent in several languages, including Mandarin. He works for a European firm and he arranges their technology purchases from China. He is married and in his mid-30s. He is a remarkable man and it was exciting to talk to him. Exceedingly well read. He knows science, math, history and literature though he never went to college. Massive reading can do much. After hearing one of my YouTube short messages, he checked out one of my other videos, and then he wrote:
“Clearly you are a brilliant scientist, i would very much like to hear your arguments for the resurrection.”
I asked whether he believes in the resurrection of Jesus. He replied:
“Not really. Not more than Mohammad flew on a horse to heaven physically.”
We met. He listened attentively and prayed accordingly. In some ways it was harder for him to embrace the truth because he has read so much, like the Gospel According to Thomas, Eastern religions, and atheistic arguments. He told me that he was trying to be polite with me, but every verse that I showed him he could come with a conflicting argument. Nonetheless, he told me that he would like to work with the mentor, Burt Brink, because I told him that Burt had been an Air Force fighter pilot and then a flight instructor. And he also said that he’d do the scripture readings each day. So only the Lord knows. Jesus said, “He who sent me is trustworthy.” John 8:26. Indeed, He is. So, I trust Him.
The next was South American PhD researcher at Rice University. A few months ago we met in front of the sinks in the restroom at work. He stopped me and told me that he has been watching my origin of life content on YouTube. And that he, being an organic chemist, agrees with me. It was nice to have that affirmation. We spoke for a while. He asked if I could suggest a book where he could learn more about these things. I suggest, “Return of the God Hypothesis”, by Steven Meyer. He immediately ordered the Kindle version. And then this week he told me that he’d like to understand how I can oppose the scientific establishment and how I can endure the things that people say about me. I told him to come to my office on Friday afternoon and I will tell him about how I can walk in these things, what brought me to this place, and how I get through it. So when he came I gave him the standard gospel message. He listened to the entire thing. He told me that he comes from a devoted Catholic background but he had drifted away from it in his 20s when he started learning about scientific things in college. But he was very quick to pray and confess the resurrection of Jesus Christ with me. After I took him through the evidence for the resurrection, he said, “I am a scientist. The evidence is the evidence.” Catholics often remain close to their roots. I gave him a Bible and a copy of “Growing in Christ”. I then hooked him up with Mike Jackson so that the two of them can meet in person to go through that Bible study together. He left my office with a bright smile.
The next was a Pakistani accountant for a U.S. online company as he was working remotely in Pakistan. I tried some of my Urdu on him and he was shocked. I told him about my wife and it warmed his heart. He described how he was born a devout Muslim. His parents were extremely devout. But like the man in China, he too became disheartened in his faith in his mid-20s. He later became agnostic. He is now in his 40s and a father. He had started listening to Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and Lawrence Krauss—staunch atheists who have, like Alexander the coppersmith, caused much harm to the church (2 Tim 4:14). I took him to the gospel message and he received. I told him that I had met Lawrence Krauss on one occasion. And I described to him what Krauss is like behind the scenes. Showing him that the people that he admired were not the type of person that he would like to become. He then confided in me concerning many of his struggles which he said he had never shared before with anyone else. All of them, though unusual to hear being confessed from a person from that culture, are not unusual among many young men in the West. Likewise, the gospel was undeterred. He ended up praying with me as needed. This man did not have a Bible so I sent him a link to the YouVersion Bible app. He too is now hooked up with Burt Brink and in daily reading.
The last is a tennis coach in his mid-30s living in the Midwest. He could not take hold of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. So we met and he too readily received after listening for one hour. He is committed to Chuck Lloyd to be assigned mentorship. He agreed to the daily reading of the scriptures as needed.
What is the common element among these four men from four different continents? For each, he ”was lost and has been found.” Luke 15:32.
God bless,
Jim Tour
