Dear Friends,
This week three men prayed with me according to the pattern of Luke 18:13 & Romans 10:9.
The first is a visiting student who is in Houston for the summer, working for an oil company. A professor of his at his home university told him about our lunches. He came and fit right in among the students. So I invited him to attend the Bible study the following week, and then come to the lunch again. He did. So we arranged a time to meet and talk, during which I could share with him evidence for the resurrection. The main challenge was to explain the veracity of the scriptures. We established that, and the testimony for the resurrection was assured. We knelt together, and he prayed aloud in my living room. He is in Bible study with Chuck Lloyd.
The next was a man who wrote the following:
Hello, my name is _________. I have a doctorate in nursing practice with a certification to administer anesthesia. I married my wife 4 years ago, a devout Christian, and my love for her inspired me to review the truth claims of a Bible I had read years prior. Unfortunately, where I was once agnostic, I’ve now become an atheist. I say “unfortunately,” in that I will fully admit that the world and universe would be a better place if the Christian narrative were true, and that my personal life would be greatly improved by being able to share the same faith with my wife. I have since read most of the bible again, investigated the original texts and source materials, I sit with my pastor (as I’m in church every Sunday as well) every quarter; and yet I still find myself as a non-resistant non-believer. I’ve watched several of your videos, mostly regarding abiogenesis and your back and forth with professor Dave. I don’t think its too wild of a statement to make that you seem to be a minority voice in the field of biology on this specific topic. I would love to speak with you, hear your testimony, and see what you have to say regarding why you believe the resurrection is a historical fact. All the best!
A “non-resistant non-believer”. He could not be far from the kingdom of God. We met, and 1 hour later, he was praying aloud according to the texts noted above, that he’s a sinner, thanking God for forgiveness, the Lordship of Jesus, and Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. He’s in Bible study with Chuck Lloyd.
The third was a TV Producer who wrote:
Hello Dr. Tour, I learned about you from watching a clip of John Lennox on YouTube. I have recently come back to the faith I was raised in (Christianity) after 20 years of atheism and have changed my perspective on a ton of objections I once held but the resurrection still gives me tremendous difficulty. I literally just yesterday in my weekly bible study was talking about this with my friends and we were discussing if you can be a Christian if you can’t affirm in your heart the resurrection.
This is one of about eight people who have written to me after watching John Lennox’s mention of me on the Alex O’Connor podcast. Alex O’Connor is an atheist (or agnostic atheist) commentator and critic of Christianity who engages Christian apologetics. He openly identifies as an atheist/agnostic and frequently critiques Christian truth claims, the resurrection, biblical ethics, suffering, and arguments for God. His podcast and debates often put him in direct civil dialogue with Christian apologists. From what I have seen, Alex strikes me less as someone hostile to Christians and more as someone who sincerely believes Christianity is false while remaining genuinely interested in discussing it. Alex has long argued against Christianity, but he appears more measured and open to dialogue now than in his earlier years. He has an enormous online following.
This young producer was also very close to the Kingdom of God, and no trouble convincing him of the truth of the resurrection. He too is assigned to Chuck Lloyd for attaining a mentor.
All three of these men assured me that they would follow through on the daily morning Bible reading program and on the 13-week Bible study with a mentor to be assigned.
“When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ Gospel of Mark 12:34
The gospel really works. Glory to the Father and to His Son, Jesus Christ.
Dr. James Tour
